Last updated: March 30, 2026

Appbrew allows you to add an app download prompt to your website, encouraging visitors to download your mobile app. This guide will walk you through the process of setting up and customizing this feature.

Enabling the App Download Prompt

To enable the app download prompt on your website:

  1. Log in to your Shopify Theme customiser

  2. Go to App embeds on the left panel

  3. Enable the Appbrew smart download banner

Follow the steps shown here:

Customizing the Prompt for Different Devices

You can customize the appearance and behavior of the prompt for desktop and mobile devices separately:

For Mobile Devices:

  • The prompt appears as a banner with a call-to-action (CTA)

  • You can choose to place it either at the top or bottom of the screen

  • This option is enabled by default when you activate the widget

For Desktop Devices:

  • The prompt appears as a QR code widget

  • You can place it in either the left or right bottom corner of the screen

  • This option can be enabled or disabled separately from the mobile prompt

Troubleshooting Common Issues

If you're experiencing issues with the prompt's placement:

  1. Check if both desktop and mobile options are enabled

  2. If the prompt appears in an undesired location (e.g., bottom left next to WhatsApp), try disabling the desktop option

  3. For mobile devices, ensure the mobile web option is enabled and positioned as desired (top or bottom)

Remember to test the app download prompt on various devices and browsers to ensure it appears correctly and functions as intended.

FAQ

Question: Can I disable the app auto-open prompt when users visit my website?

Context

When customers have your mobile app installed and visit your website through Safari on iOS, they see a prompt asking if they want to open the app instead of viewing the website. Some users may want to disable this behavior to ensure they can always access the website directly without being redirected to the app.

Answer

Unfortunately, it's not possible to selectively disable the app auto-open prompt for specific scenarios while keeping it enabled for others. The deep linking feature can only be controlled on an all-or-nothing basis.

Here's what you need to know about this behavior: (assuming app is insitalled)

  • Safari behavior: Safari shows a prompt asking users if they want to open the app, giving them the choice to stay on the website or switch to the app

  • Chrome behavior: Chrome automatically redirects users to the app without showing a prompt

  • Control limitations: Deep linking can only be enabled or disabled entirely - it cannot be turned off for specific entry points like emails while remaining active for product links

If you disable deep linking completely, it will affect all app redirects including product links, email links, and other promotional materials. This is a system-level limitation that cannot be customized on a per-scenario basis.

Users can control this behavior on their device by choosing "Cancel" or "Open" when the Safari prompt appears, which will remember their preference for future visits.

Question: Can I disable the app auto-open prompt after few seconds?

Currently we do not support the functionality to disable the banner after 5 seconds.
If required, you can disable the app embedded prompt entirely and replace it with a similar download banner that you create on your end and add to your website. To redirect the users to app/play store, you can use the onelink feature. [Ref onelink doc]
